Tropical Storm Chris lurks off North Carolina coast

Beryl at 11am on July 8

After pushing across Dominica and moving into the Caribbean Sea the remnants of Beryl will encounter strong wind shear weakening the system even more but it still could produce some rainy weather with 30-40 miles per hour gusts for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Island late Monday and into Tuesday.

Meanwhile, tropical storm Beryl was located about 240 miles east of Barbados, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, the NHC said early Sunday.

Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit told people to store water because the government would be shutting down the water system as a precaution, and he warned them to stay alert despite the storm weakening.

Meteorologist Marshall Alexander told The Associated Press that officials were anxious about those living with tarps on their roofs after Maria slammed into Dominica as a Category 5 storm previous year, killing dozens of people.

Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September, remains under a state of emergency.

As of Sunday, Beryl was producing maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour with higher gusts.

According to a National Hurricane Center update, swells caused by the storm are expected to increase around the coasts of North Carolina and the mid-Atlantic states through early next week. Tropical storm warnings were in effect for Dominica and Guadeloupe.

Forecasters said conditions somewhat conducive for regeneration of a tropical cyclone are expected as Beryl is forecast to move across the Bahamas and the western Atlantic.

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello met with his Cabinet and meteorological experts on Sunday to prepare for Beryl's arrival, Rossello's office said in a statement.

There were no coastal storm watches or warnings issued early Sunday and the storm was expected to meander off the Carolinas for the next few days. It was seen staying well off the USA coast.

National Weather Service meteorologist Carlos Anselmi told the AP that 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) of rain was expected across Puerto Rico, with double that in isolated areas.
