Trump rails against Germany, demands allies double NATO spending

French President Emmanuel Macron quickly disputed Trump's claim that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies had agreed to boost defence spending beyond the two per cent benchmark, citing the group's communique that lays out the original goal.

New Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt backed Mr Trump's demand for our allies to pay more.

In a taut exchange with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday, Trump said Nord Stream 2 - an offshore pipeline that would deliver gas to Germany directly from Russian Federation via the Baltic Sea - leaves the Western military alliance's largest and wealthiest European member "totally controlled" by and "captive to" Russian Federation.

"Trump did in Brussels what he has done elsewhere: He manufactured a crisis and then grandiosely claimed to have fixed it, leaving America's allies bruised and irritated", Paris said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, left, talks to U.S. President Donald Trump as British Prime Minister Theresa May, right watches at the opening ceremony of the NATO summit at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Trump did not specify which countries had committed to what, and it remained unclear whether any had changed their plans.

Trump wants the spending to go up to 4% of GDP, which is more than even the US now spends on defense.

"The fact is that we have a commitment to increase defense spending". "It confirms the goal of 2% by 2024".

"No holds barred, no subjects off limits", the "Fox News Sunday" anchor said on "America's Newsroom".

Despite Trump efforts, U.S. trade deficit with China hits record
The dispute has jolted global financial markets, raising worries a full-scale trade war could derail the world economy. Its trade surplus with the United States over the same period was $133.76bn, up from $117.51bn previous year .

"President Trump never at any moment, either in public or in private, threatened to withdraw from NATO", Macron said.

In the end, however, Mr. Trump agreed to NATO's 23-page declaration that said it would boost defense spending, and reconfirmed their outrage over Moscow's invasion of the Crimea, and maintaining sanctions on Russian Federation.

While denying Putin's role, Trump has blamed President Barack Obama for not doing enough to stop it.

Merkel's predecessor, Gerhard Schroeder, a longtime friend of Putin, has championed the Nord Stream enterprise since just before being voted out of office in 2005.

According to the UralSib expert, the situation that Trump described at the meeting with Stoltenberg on July 11, where Russian Federation contributes 60 to 70% of Germany's presumably gas imports, is only hypothetical.

"We made a tremendous amount of progress today since past year", Trump said during a surprise news conference Thursday. For Germany, the focus of much of Trump's criticism, that number was 6.6 percent. "I'm a very stable genius". However, he then suddenly changed his tone and said that "if we could develop a relationship, it would be good for Russian Federation and good for us, good for everybody".

Trump heads next to the United Kingdom. Trump criticized her strategy on cutting ties to the European Union, cast doubt on whether he was willing to negotiate a new trade deal between Britain and the United States and praised May's political rival Boris Johnson. Before traveling to Helsinki for his meeting with Putin, Trump will have tea with Queen Elizabeth before heading to his golf course in Turnberry, Scotland, for the weekend.

Nonetheless, he has simultaneously asserted that the USA should pay less. And one of the freedoms we have is freedom of speech and the freedom to express your views.

"We had a very intense summit", Merkel herself told reporters after the meeting.
