Trump ready to help some North Atlantic Treaty Organisation states buy U.S. arms

World Leaders Meet For NATO Summit In Brussels

Following an emergency session at the alliance headquarters in Brussels to discuss his demands, the U.S. president said the other members have agreed an unprecedented increase in defence spending.

Having questioned the value of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in tweets throughout the summit, Trump later told reporters that the 29-member military alliance "was not doing what they were supposed to be doing" until he came to Brussels and that he was "extremely unhappy" until his intervention.

Merkel, facing domestic political opposition to pushing defence spending up from 1.2 percent of GDP, said she explained to Trump how much was already being done.

The president set himself a low bar for what he'll achieve in Moscow, telling reporters: "I think we go into that meeting looking for not so much".

Donald Trump's Jekyll and Hyde performance on the opening leg of his European tour - one minute angrily wielding a wrecking ball and the next playing the oleaginous anglophile - will hardly leave European diplomats, especially those in Britain, reassured as they brace themselves for his bilateral summit with Vladimir Putin on Monday.

Negotiations would then be widened to include members of both delegations, he said, adding that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will hold parallel talks in Helsinki with his US counterpart, Mike Pompeo.

At the end of the first day, Trump unsettled allies even more by questioning the value of the military alliance, which was formed to counter Soviet aggression during the Cold War. "There is a complete unpredictability in this, and one of the things you need in this alliance is predictability towards Russian Federation".

Tusk also accused Trump of criticizing Europe nearly everyday and insisting that the European Union spends much more on defense than Russian Federation does.

Despite reports of tensions between Trump and some of the US's closest allies, the president insisted that relations between the leaders remain "very strong".

Trump rails against Germany, demands allies double North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spending
Trump did not specify which countries had committed to what, and it remained unclear whether any had changed their plans. For Germany, the focus of much of Trump's criticism, that number was 6.6 percent. "I'm a very stable genius".

Trump said he made his anger clear to allies on Wednesday. "Every single U.S. president has been pushing the point of extra spending since Reagan and they have all been played I am not going to be".

Trump is reported to have spoken of "grave consequences" if allies did not meet their 2 percent of GDP defense spending targets, saying that the United States could "go our own way" if his demands were not met.

Another NATO diplomat said Trump trampled on protocol by pointing at some leaders he said were not spending enough and addressing Merkel by her first name, referring to her as "you, Angela".

Although administration officials point to the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom, Trump's itinerary will largely keep him out of central London, where significant protests are expected.

But he reiterated his demand that USA allies spend more on defense.

Instead, a series of events - a black-tie dinner with business leaders, a meeting with May and an audience with Queen Elizabeth - will happen outside the bustling city, where Mayor Sadiq Khan has been in a verbal battle with Trump.

Brussels may dismiss this as typical Trumpian bluster, but my sense is that Trump is not bluffing. According to CNN, he said: "I told people that I would be very unhappy if they didn't up their commitments very substantially".

Trump pointed to the texts to label the ongoing investigation a "rigged witch hunt", and said the probe "really hurts our country and it really hurts our relationship with Russian Federation".

Two of her top government officials resigned earlier this week over negotiations on how to manage Brexit, including foreign secretary Boris Johnson, whom Trump has called a "friend".
