Trump's United Kingdom visit has high potential for embarrassment

Donald Trump has touched down in the United Kingdom, for his four-day trip which includes talks with Prime Minister Theresa May and a meeting with the Queen.

Trump was making his first trip to Great Britain as president after a tense summit with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders in Brussels that began Wednesday and on the heels of ruptures in May's government because of the crisis over Britain's exit from the European Union.

Mr Trump and his wife Melania are expected to stay in London only for a single overnight stay at the United States embassy.

Mr Trump with meet with UK Prime Minister Theresa May and the Queen.

Some 77 per cent of Britons have an unfavourable view of Trump, according to a poll by YouGov with 1,648 respondents.

"I've always liked writing amusing songs and he just lends himself to them". "But maybe they're taking a little bit of a different route, so I don't know if that's what they voted for", said Trump.

Asked about Trump's comments at a hastily-arranged meeting with journalists, May said she was delivering wishes of the British people.

Britain "is in somewhat turmoil", Trump said before departing Washington, remarking that dealing with Putin might surprisingly be the easiest part of the European trip.

Trump's victory in the 2016 presidential election shocked British diplomats in Washington and relations between May, a vicar's daughter, and Trump have been strained at times. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and the official tasked with overseeing the country's exit from the European Union both resigned earlier this week.

Scotland Secretary says Trump's visit to country will help 'strengthen vital links'
The petition against Trump claimed an official state visit would be embarrassing for the Queen. Later, Trump will go to Windsor Castle for tea with 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth.

But protests against Mr Trump have already started, with about a dozen activists from Stand Up to Racism Scotland staging a brief demo outside the Turnberry course on Wednesday.

May is hoping Trump's trip will boost the close ties between their two nations and help forge a future free trade deal once Britain leaves the EU.

Trump will travel by helicopter once there, making it unlikely he'll see protests firsthand.

He said: 'I am looking forward to greeting Mr Trump on behalf of the UK Government when he arrives in Scotland on Friday. I think they agree with me on immigration'.

"There is no stronger alliance than that of our special relationship with the USA and there will be no alliance more important in the years ahead", May said ahead of the visit.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to march through London in protest against Mr Trump's visit and some of his actions during his first 18 months in power.

Speaking about the protests - that includes a giant balloon baby flown over Parliament - Trump told reporters in Brussels that he was well-regarded by Brits.

Any yet Britain has entertained some equally controversial world leaders before him.

The two leaders are also expected to discuss Russia, Brexit and Middle East.
