Turkey sacks 18,500 state employees in new decree

Turkey fires thousands of public servants in anti-terror purge

Turkish media dubbed the latest decree as the "last", with officials indicating the state of emergency could end as early as Monday.

With the declaration of new cabinet, the state of emergency that expires on July 19 should automatically be lifted, according to outgoing Prime Minister Binali Yildirim. Turkey says the measures are necessary to combat threats to national security.

The current parliamentary system will end under constitutional changes approved in a referendum a year ago.

They came less than two weeks before the expected lifting of emergency rule, which was imposed following the attempted coup on July 15, 2016.

Prosecutors in Istanbul issued arrest warrants for 271 soldiers, 122 of whom are still on active duty, as part of a probe into followers of US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen in the Turkish armed forces, news agency Anadolu reported.

Gulen denies involvement in the coup attempt.

8998 police officers are being dismissed, including 3077 lay-offs in the Army, 1126 in the Navy, 1949 in the Air Force and 192 in the Coast Guard.

In total, 148 workers who had been previously sacked were reinstated to their positions.

The detentions show no sign of slowing down after hundreds of people including soldiers were taken into custody last week over Gulen links.

Tens of thousands of people have been arrested in Turkey in an unprecedented crackdown since the failed coup.

The PKK is blacklisted as a terrorist group by Ankara, the European Union and the United States.
