Typhoon Maria: Huge waves and high winds batter Chinese coastal towns

Taiwan spared as Typhoon Maria weakens

Dramatic video footage of the typhoon's destruction on Wednesday shows huge waves beating against the sea shore across Xiapu County and Lianjiang County, reaching as high as nine metres (30 feet), Xinhua News reported. Maria is the first typhoon of the season for Taiwan.

On Tuesday, more than 2,000 soldiers were deployed to evacuate almost 3,500 people across Taiwan amid warnings of floods and landslides.

Downpours of up to 100 millimeters (4 inches) hit some areas overnight, according to the weather bureau, and strong winds were still expected as the storm moved northwest.

All schools, including kindergartens, in the city were closed on Wednesday due to the typhoon. Authorities have told people to avoid the coast. Trees were reported to have fallen and some mountainous roads were blocked.

The statistics also showed that a total of 59,485 households around Taiwan lost power because of the storm, and 3,435 households were still without electricity as of 2 p.m. Wednesday. Hundreds of flights were affected.

Typhoon Maria also caused the cancellation of 138 worldwide flights and 170 domestic flights as schools and factories were closed on the island of 23 million people.

Eight people were injured as Typhoon Maria passed over northern Taiwan late Tuesday and early Wednesday, according to the latest information on the storm issued by the Central Emergency Operation Center.

However, Japan has been reeling from its worst weather-related disaster for decades after days of deadly floods and landslides triggered by record rains killed at least 179 in the west of the country.
