United States indicts 12 Russians for hacking DNC emails during the 2016 election

Rod Rosenstein

That put Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein in charge, and he promptly appointed former FBI Director Mueller as special counsel.

The Justice Department says the 12 defendants are all members of the Russian intelligence arm GRU, and attempted to interfere with the 2016 presidential election.

The indictment lays out a sweeping and coordinated effort to break into key Democratic email accounts, including those belonging to the Democratic National Committee, the Clinton campaign and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. They are accused of releasing the stolen emails on a website, dcleaks.com.

Later, Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta also was embarrassed by the release of his emails.

CNN's Jake Tapper explained why the bombshell indictments from special counsel Robert Mueller on Friday were such a significant development in the 2016 election interference case, calling it a "remarkable turn of events".

Rosenstein said that responsibility for this prosecution - which is unlikely to go forward in court as Russian Federation is unlikely to extradite the suspects - would pass from Mueller's office to the National Security division of the Justice Department.

London awaits Trump's visit, braces for protests
In an incendiary interview , warned that her Brexit plan would "kill the deal" between the USA and Britain on trade. Trump will spend one night in British capital. "I would actually say that she probably went the opposite way".

There is no indication any of the named defendants are in the United States or countries from which the U.S.is likely to be able to extradite them.

Rosenstein said there is no allegation that USA citizens were involved in the alleged crimes described in the indictment.

"It's important not to think as Republicans or Democrats, but patriotically as Americans", he said. Our response must not depend on who was victimized,"Rosenstein said".

US intelligence agencies have concluded that Putin personally ordered a campaign to undermine "public faith in the USA democratic process" with the goal of hurting Clinton's candidacy and ultimately helping to elect Trump.

It comes days before Mr Trump's Helsinki meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, casting a major shadow over the encounter. Trump has said he believes Putin's denials that Russian Federation did not meddle in the election.
