Updates as Theresa May meets her new-look cabinet

David Davis had boasted of his good relationship with Michel Barnier the EU’s lead Brexit negotiator

In a statement, Johnson savaged May's strategy, accusing her of allowing an optimistic Brexit vision to become clouded by a failure of ambition.

Britain's Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Boris Johnson arrives at 10 Downing Street in London, Britain, July 3, 2018.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has been named as Mr Johnson's replacement as foreign secretary.

Dominic Raab was appointed Brexit secretary by Mrs May after Davis' resignation.

"This is the right Brexit", she said.

When asked whether May would contest any vote on a confidence motion in her leadership, her spokesman said: "Yes".

With May looking at a busy week - a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit and hosting Donald Trump - she is not out of danger yet. "That dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt", he wrote.

"The Chequers Car Crash crosses Theresa May's own red lines, it certainly fails Labour's six tests and it is a million miles away from the kind of Brexit people thought they were getting - whether they voted Leave or Remain in 2016".

He went on to explain how the current political turmoil in Britain will work to the EU's advantage in Brexit negotiations.

May, having finally signalled her vision for Brexit, spent two hours in parliament defiantly defending the plans and called for Brussels to engage fully or risk the damaging prospect of Britain leaving the bloc with no deal in place.

Johnson agreed to it at the time, but has since reneged on his decsion, writing: "On Friday I acknowledged that my side of the argument were too few to prevail, and congratulated you on at least reaching a Cabinet decision on the way forward".

Why did David Davis resign? Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

Four More Boys Pulled From Flooded Thailand Cave
Soccer's governing body, FIFA, has invited the boys to the World Cup final in Moscow on Sunday if they make it out in time. So far eight boys aged between 12 and 16 have been led out of the cave system by a team of expert divers over two days.

"It seems to me we're giving too much away, too easily, and that's a unsafe strategy at this time", Davis said in a BBC radio interview Monday morning.

"In his resignation letter, Davis said the "'common rule book policy hands control of large swathes of our economy to the European Union and is certainly not returning control of our laws in any real sense".

May's government was rocked Monday by the resignations of Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis.

But she told MPs: "We do not agree on the best way to deliver our shared commitments to honour the result of the referendum".

He said: "This proves that at Chequers there was clearly a unity of views in the British Cabinet".

There was a crisis in government, he said, adding: "It is clear this government can not secure a good deal for Britain".

She was not left in the clear by her MPs either, with challenges from hardline Brexiteers - with Peter Bone claiming campaigners had been "betrayed".

What has been the reaction from the EU?

European Council President Donald Tusk said Monday that "the mess caused by Brexit is the biggest problem in the history of EU-UK relations and it is still very far from being resolved".

What does it all mean for Brexit?

Johnson quit on Monday over Prime Minister Theresa May's plan for Brexit, which include remaining closely aligned to European Union rules on manufactured goods.

The Frenchman said:"Once again, I regret profoundly the vote of the United Kingdom, we respect it and we will implement it".
