US Threatens Sanctions for Companies Investing in Russian Pipeline

Donald Trump arrives at the Nato Summit in Brussels

The world's most controversial energy project threatens to upend the North Atlantic military alliance after US President Donald Trump targeted the multi-billion euro Nord Stream gas pipeline in a startling broadside against Angela Merkel.

Mr. Trump's comments came ahead of his summit on Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, though the Kremlin said they were unlikely to have an impact on what was always going to be a hard meeting due to the number of disagreements between the two countries.

"Threats of USA sanctions against European companies invested in Nord Stream 2 encroach on European energy policy", Wolfgang Buechele, chairman of the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations (Ostausschuss), told Reuters.

The US is opposed to the project because it will increase Europe's reliance on Russian Federation for gas supplies. The US State Department overnight repeated a warning to Western firms that they risk sanctions if they continue with the project. "This guarantees stability and further development of mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields", he added.

He said: "He's a big manager, he's won a lot of things, made history with this club". "I'll give my best to achieve for the club". Mahrez also heaped praise on England after they were knocked out of the World Cup by Croatia on Wednesday night.

Nord Stream 2 is a pipeline project to transport natural gas from eastern Russian Federation to northern Germany, where it would link up with infrastructure that carries fuel to Western Europe, reported CNBC.

"We consider that it's a question of economic competition and that. the buyers must take their own decision", he said.

The US has long opposed Nord Stream 2 because it is an alternative to Nord Stream, Russia's existing pipeline through Ukraine.

Five Western firms have invested in Nord Stream 2 - Wintershall and Uniper of Germany, Austria's OMV, Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell, and France's Engie.
