Washburn County Bird Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

West Nile is transmitted by the Southern house mosquito

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is warning residents that cases of the West Nile Virus have been confirmed in the area.

Last year, a total of seven West Nile cases were found in Alberta, according to Alberta Health.

The results for the second crow came back positive four days later. The first case was reported in late June. He said his crew was done with scheduled spraying, but would spray an area if citizens called reporting mosquitoes.

Wearing a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and socks when outdoors - especially at dusk and dawn.

They also say any open water should be drained since it is a breeding ground for mosquitos. Last year, MS reported 63 West Nile cases, two of which were fatal.

For members of the public, one of the most effective means of controlling mosquitoes is to make sure water does not collect in artificial containers, including even such things as children's toys left outdoors, Summers said. This is the third year in a row that a dead bird in Washburn County has been found to be infected with WNV.

In addition to wild bird testing, the Mosquito Control Section also operates 20 monitoring stations with caged chickens in the field statewide from early July into October. When a chicken is bitten by an infected mosquito, the chicken develops antibodies to fight off the virus.

Suttorp says wearing protective clothing and appropriate insect repellent will help reduce your chances of contracting West Nile virus.

Make sure window and door screens are in good fix to prevent mosquito entry.

Symptoms include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and headache, while those with neurological syndrome can show serious symptoms, including tremors, drowsiness and paralysis.
