10 years after Russian Federation war, Georgia decries Moscow's ongoing 'occupation'

Russian troops enter a South Ossetian village in August 2008 during the lightning war with Georgia

Dmitry Medvedev said in an interview with the Kommersant daily broadcast by Russian state television that NATO's plans to eventually offer membership to Georgia are "absolutely irresponsible" and a "threat to peace".

"Unfortunately, the Russian military presence in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia continues in violation of global law and commitments undertaken by Russia under the 12 August 2008 agreement, mediated by the European Union", the EU statement reads.

In the summer of 2008, Georgian forces launched an offensive against separatists in South Ossetia, a small pro-Russian region on the border of the two countries.

The only United Nations member states to recognize the breakaway regions are Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Nauru.

Georgia and its Soviet-era master Russian Federation have always been at loggerheads over Tbilisi's bid to join the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation with the spiralling confrontation culminating in a five-day war in 2008.

Death toll in Indonesia earthquake rises to 91
Immediately after the first shock, the authorities issued a warning about the possibility of a tsunami , which was later canceled. Chrissy Teigen who is vacationing in nearby Bali witnessed the natural disaster first hand from relatively safe distance.

"This is a war against Georgia, an aggression, an occupation, and a blatant violation of worldwide law", Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili told a round table meeting attended by Georgian government officials and visiting foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine's vice premier.

Together with Ukraine, they also issued a joint statement demanding "full implementation of the ceasefire agreement", involvement in the process of International Geneva Conversations and the admittance of the EU's Monitoring Mission to the occupied territories of Georgia.

Prominent Georgian politicians are keen for their country to join the Western military alliance, but have seen chances of joining hampered by Russian territorial incursions. We understand that if any other country claims that they are part of its national territory, this may have severe consequences. "It could provoke a awful conflict". "What Russia did and is doing against a sovereign government is a war between Russia Georgia, it's aggression, it's an occupation and it's a violation of all worldwide norms", president Giorgi Margvelashvili told ministers from Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine at a meeting in the capital Tbilisi. "I hope that NATO's leadership will be smart enough not to take any steps in that direction", he said.

"This visit will not only be symbolic, but we will also talk with our colleagues, president and prime minister, Georgia's foreign minister, how we can specifically support them in cooperation with the European Union and NATO", Rinkevics added.
