25 million year-old shark teeth discovered

Amateur fossil hunter stumbles upon rare teeth from ancient mega-shark

Fossil enthusiast and school teacher Philip Mullaly discovered the rare pair, which are the first of their kind found in Australia and one of only three discoveries in the world.

The shark could be found in Australia's oceans 25 million years ago, and survived by eating small whales and penguins.

Found along the Surf Coast in Victoria by a fossil enthusiast named Phillip Mullaly, the teeth measure a stunning 2.7 inches long, and are evidence that the megalodon wasn't the only very big shark prowling around our ancient waters.

"These teeth are of worldwide significance, as they represent one of just three associated groupings of Carcharocles angustidens teeth in the world, and the very first set to ever be discovered in Australia", Fitzgerald said.

Museums Victoria was his next call; it eventually sent out a team to excavate the area, and several more 3-inch (9cm) teeth showed up right in the same spot, indicating the shark had died right there, 25 million years ago.

Meanwhile, interest in Mina ended when the Colombian's advisors asked for what has been described as a "ridiculous" fee. Our first-half was a good performance with good quality, good pressing, good play forward and a lot of chances.

The New York Times reports Mullaly found the teeth in 2015.

Mullaly donated the teeth to the Melbourne Museum, where they are on display until October 7. So he showed them to paleontologist Erich Fitzgerald, who went back with Mullaly and a team of experts to find over 40 more teeth and some vertebrae of the awesome Carcharocles angustidens.

Paleontologist-a lover Philip Mullaly came across a unique artifact when walking through the countryside, Jan-JUC, located about 100 kilometers from Melbourne. At the same time, ancient teeth are seldom preserved, because the cartilage in their make-up doesn't fossilize easily. They also found teeth belonging to several different Sixgill sharks (Hexanchus), Museums Victoria said, a species that still roams Australia's coastal waters.

This makes the newfound fossils all the more extraordinary, as multiple shark teeth coming from the same specimen are notoriously hard to find. "The stench of blood and decaying flesh would have drawn scavengers from far around", Museums Victoria palaeontologist Tim Ziegler said in a statement.

"Sixgill sharks still live off the Victorian coast today, where they live off the remains of whales and other animals". This means that the sixgill shark's behavior has not changed much for tens of millions of years.
