76 people overdose on synthetic marijuana at Connecticut park

25 people overdose at Connecticut park officials say

Authorities in CT arrested a 34-year-old man after more than 30 people were found suffering overdose symptoms at or near the New Haven Green.

People on and around the historic New Haven Green near Yale University began falling ill shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, and the overdoses continued into this morning. The synthetic cannabinoid K2 is often laced with other substances, CNN reports, adding that authorities believe an added opioid may have contributed to the New Haven overdoses.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. The number of overdose victims linked to a suspected bad batch of synthetic marijuana has risen to 76 in New Haven, Connecticut, as officials try to determine exactly what sickened people.

As of Wednesday evening, police have not identified the suspect.

Police said they arrested a man believed to be connected to at least some of the overdoses. Although there have been no deaths, at least two people suffered life-threatening symptoms, according to authorities. Vomiting and hallucinating drug users dropped like flies throughout the day as emergency crews raced to the New Haven Green to save lives.

A "mass overdose" appears to have taken place in a CT park today (Aug. 15), according to news reports.

The best hospitals 2018-19 honor roll
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is ranked # 2 in the nation among the top the hospitals specializing in cancer care. Harborview Medical Center was nationally ranked in urology (32) and high performing in pulmonary services and orthopedics.

"We literally had people running around the Green providing treatment", said Rick Fontana, the city's emergency operations director.

The response from emergency responders has been "tremendous", Fontana said.

"Do not come down to the Green and purchase this K2", New Haven Police Chief Anthony Campbell warned, according to WABC-TV. "Some of the reactions of the patients in the emergency department would suggest that there was an opioid involved as well", Bogucki told reporters during a news conference Wednesday. "We are doing our best to get people to the hospital in the safest, most practical and efficient manner". "The substance behind these overdoses is highly unsafe and must be avoided".

"This was a particularly odd, rare occasion where (there was) call after call for man down, obviously with symptoms of some kind of overdose, and at the time of getting that patient packaged and transported to the hospital, we'd see another immediately fall down, right there", Jones said.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said the state departments of Public Health and Mental Health and Addiction Services were helping New Haven officials.

More than a dozen people overdosed on synthetic marijuana at the same park July 4. So far, there have been few scientific studies of the effects of synthetic cannabinoids on the human brain, but researchers do know that some of them bind more strongly than marijuana to the cell receptors affected by THC, and can produce much stronger effects.
