AMD Announces Second-Gen Ryzen Threadripper CPUs With Up to 32 Cores

Benchmark Leak :

"We created a new standard for the HEDT market when we launched our first Ryzen Threadripper processors a year ago, delivering a ground-breaking level of computing power for the world's most demanding PC users", said Jim Anderson, senior vice president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Business Group, AMD.

AMD has leaked a performance benchmark for its imminent monster 32-core Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX processor, which shows it blazing past Intel's Core i9-7980XE flagship chip. Priced at $1,799, the CPU packs no fewer than 32 cores that can run 62 CPU threads with a base clock frequency of three gigahertz. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2000s are set to be introduced in AUG 13th.

That compares to a score of 3,335 for the Intel Core i9-7980XE (which is an 18-core processor), and it means that the AMD chip is 53% faster than its rival flagship.

It's also worth noting that AMD ran this particular Cinebench test on June 26, so it was a while back, and used a sample 2990WX chip; meaning the finished production version of the processor will run even more speedily.

MoviePass just killed its signature unlimited movie plan
That reverses a change announced last week that would have cut access to blockbusters within the first two weeks of release. After announcing a price hike just a week ago MoviePass today announced that they will keep their price at $9.95 a month.

Headlining the lineup is the Threadripper 2990WX. The Ryzen Threadripper 2950X will launch shortly after, on August 31, while the two remaining Threadripper 2 models, the Ryzen Threadripper 2970X and Ryzen Threadripper 2920X, won't be on the shelves until an unspecified date in October. At $899 (£695) it's cheaper than its 1950X's predecessor, despite now offering a is single-core boost speed of 4.4GHz - the highest of any Ryzen CPU and a 3.5GHz base clock.

All four of the second-generation Threadripper chips are based on the existing Zen architecture, which also is the foundation for AMD's mainstream Ryzen chips and its server and enterprise-class EPYC CPUs. The Ryzen Threadripper X-series is aimed at "gamers and enthusiasts", and includes 12-core and 16-core models which directly replace last year's original Threadripper products. This 12-core / 24-thread chip might be the bottom of the stack, but with a 3.5GHz base clock and 4.3GHz boost clock it sure has a lot of promise.

The Threadripper 2990WX is an impressive chip, but would you benefit from having it in your rig? The WX chips are designed for 250 watts, up from 180 watts for the first-gen Threadripper chips.

The second chip arriving August, although not until the 31st, is the Ryzen Threadripper 2950X.
