Armed bystander stops gunman at crowded Titusville park, police say

A bystander shot the gunman, who was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries Saturday after the incident at the "Peace in the City" event in Titusville, police said.

"We are extremely grateful that nobody else was injured in this incident", said Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson in a statement.

As families tried to hide, police say a witness pulled out his licensed gun and took the gunman down. If he had not acted, the situation could have ended up much worse, police said.

The shooting happened at Isaac Campbell Park on South Street. Nobody else was injured during the shooting.

"A man involved in a fistfight with another person at a crowded park, left, and returned several minutes' later with a gun and opened fire".

Harvey told the news outlet he was thankful the bystander was in the right place at the right time to quickly end what could have been an even worse situation. The shooting was reported at 5:20 p.m.at Isaac Campbell Park in the central Florida city of Titusville, which is across the river from the Kennedy Space Center.

The bystander who shot the suspect waited for officers and has been fully cooperative with the ongoing investigation, they said. Police have yet to identify the suspect or the armed bystander.

Detectives have consulted with the State Attorney's office and no charges are expected against the bystander as his actions were within the law based on the preliminary investigation.
