Mr Dutton is their leadership standard-bearer, with former prime minister Tony Abbott a key agitator on the backbench.

According to Nine News, one of Dutton's Liberal supporters said: "We are going off a cliff under Turnbull".

While Coalition marginal seat holders have publicly supported Mr Turnbull, some privately lobbied in favour of Mr Dutton to improve the party's chances in Queensland.

Mr Dutton faced questions about his eligibility to sit in Federal Parliament last night after reports emerged that he had an interest in two childcare centres in Brisbane through the RHT Family Trust, both of which receive a direct subsidy from the Government.

Mr Abbott said: 'It's no way to run a government, making absolute commitments on Tuesday and breaking them on Friday'.

"The only way we can win the next election is to have a contest over policy not personalities".

Gatwick resorts to whiteboards for flight information after IT crash
Images shared on social media show hundreds of people gathered around the whiteboards trying to find out where their gates are. In a tweet , the airport blames an "ongoing issue" with Vodafone, who provides IT services for the airport.

However, he declined to elaborate on the comment when quizzed by reporters yesterday and Ms Bishop later said she understood he had not said it.

Despite Mr Turnbull's capitulation to energy policy rebels in his ranks, the threat to his leadership did not dissipate.

Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese said the prime minister should call an election, if he survives the week.

Malcolm Turnbull is being assured he has the numbers to resist any immediate push from Peter Dutton after the Government dumped its carbon emissions reduction target to placate internal dissidents. The next day Tony Abbott challenged but then declared he would back Joe Hockey.

The leadership talk was fueled by an Ipsos poll published in Fairfax newspapers, which showed support for Turnbull's Liberal-National coalition falling four points to 45 percent, 10 points behind opposition party Labor and enough for a crushing electoral defeat.

"Mr Turnbull is truly a white flag prime minister", Mr Shorten said.
