Blue Light From Phones Speeds Up Blindness, Study Claims

Blue Light From Your Phones and Laptops May Be Ruining Your Eyes New Study Reveals

The study found blue light turns a molecule in the eye into a cell-killing poison. Now, researchers from the University of Toledo have discovered exactly why this is, publishing their findings in the journal Scientific Reports. When exposed to blue light, these cell types died as a result of the combination with retinal. Now, scientists at the University of Toledo say the blue light that comes from electronics is doing permanent damage to our vision. "Our experiments explain how this happens, and we hope this leads to therapies that slow macular degeneration, such as a new kind of eye drop", study co-author Ajith Karunarathne said.

Macular degeneration, an incurable eye disease that results in significant vision loss starting on average in a person in his 50s or 60s, is the death of photoreceptor cells in the retina.

Unfortunately, there's now no cure for AMD, although certain treatments like eye injections can help slow down its progression. Apparently, blue light can cause blindness.

They found that when blue light is shone on the molecule, it triggers poisonous chemical reactions in photoreceptor cells.

Scientists have long known blue light from device screens contribute to blindness.

That's the warning being offered up by researchers from the USA who found that prolonged exposure to blue light can lead to the generation of poisonous molecules in the eye's light-sensitive cells. The damage is permanent.

Torchlight Frontiers Bringing Back ARPG Series
Details about the game are scarce at the moment, but it will continue to exist in the same universe as its predecessors. While there are few details about Torchlight Frontiers at the moment, we do know there will be a beta.

It kills photoreceptor cells, which do not regenerate. "When they're dead, they're dead for good", said Karunarathne. These retinal molecules were them introduced into other cell types of the body such as heart cells, nerve cells, cancer cells etc.

From cellphones to laptops to tablets, screens are all around us - and for many, it's hard to look away. Retinal is a form of vitamin A that changes shape when exposed to light rays. But as we age, or if the immune system is suppressed, we lose the ability to fight against attacks by retinal and blue light. "It can kill any cell type", said Dr Karunarathne, "No activity is sparked with green, yellow or red light".

For those wanting to protect their eyes from blue light, Dr Karunarathne advises wearing sunglasses that can filter both UV and blue light outside and avoiding browsing on mobile phones or tablets in the dark.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the United States and while it does not cause total blindness, AMD can make everyday activities such as reading and recognising faces hard.

Dr Karunarathne said: "That is when the real damage occurs".
