Brazilian Ronaldo in intensive care with pneumonia

Former Brazil and Real Madrid great Ronaldo Nazario is now in hospital in Ibiza recovering from pneumonia, sources have confirmed to ESPN FC.

The 41-year-old former striker tweeted that he was taken ill on Friday but hopes to be discharged on Monday. The newspaper reports he is making positive progress.

Ronaldo is a frequent visitor to the Balearic party island of Ibiza and owns a property there.

No-one at the private hospital Ronaldo is now said to be a patient at could be contacted early on Sunday for comment. He is thought to have arrived on the island a few days ago before his illness started.

Ronaldo went down with dengue fever in January 2012 and posted a picture of himself on Twitter hooked up to a drip in hospital alongside the message: 'Good morning to all those who began the New Year with dengue'.

Pneumonia is swelling of the tissue in one or both lungs and is usually caused by a bacterial infection.

Ronaldo, whose full name is Ronaldo Luiz Nazario de Lima, rose to fame for his exploits as a striker for many of Europe's top clubs, as well as the Brazilian national team.

He won his first cap for Brazil as a 17-year-old and went on to score 62 goals in 97 global appearances, including both goals when Brazil beat Germany 2-0 in the 2002 World Cup final.

During his playing career, Ronaldo was famous for his blistering pace and phenomenal goal-scoring record.
