Brennan says Trump move 'designed to send message'

Brennan blasts Trump's no collusion claims as 'hogwash'

"I applaud President Trump for his revoking of John Brennan's security clearance".

A retired Navy admiral spoke out against President Trump Thursday over Trump's move to strip former CIA Director John Brennan's security clearance.

He had high hopes for Trump as president, he writes, but he has been let down.

"There needs to be an official determination made about this, and that, I think, can only be done by the Mueller investigation", Clapper told CNN on Thursday. Trump blames Brennan and others for planting the seeds of the special counsel's probe that has dogged his presidency for the last 15 months.

The White House announced Wednesday it will be cutting off Brennan's access to classified information.

Brennan blasts Trump's no collusion claims as 'hogwash'

The former Central Intelligence Agency director took aim at Trump for his public call as a candidate in July 2016 for Russian Federation to help find missing emails of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, who was being scrutinised for having used a private email server while secretary of state.

They include Comey; James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence; former CIA Director Michael Hayden; former national security adviser Susan Rice; and Andrew McCabe, who served as Trump's deputy Federal Bureau of Investigation director until he was sacked in March. Trump's statement, distributed to reporters, was dated July 26, 2018, suggesting it could have been held and then released when needed to change a damaging subject.

Brennan called Trump's behavior at a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin "nothing short of treasonous". And California's Adam Schiff, the ranking Democrat on the House intelligence committee, tweeted, "An enemies list is ugly, undemocratic and un-American". Bob Corker, Republican from Tennessee, saying, "Unless there's something tangible that I'm unaware of, it just, as I've said before, feels like a banana republic kind of thing".

In citing the Russian Federation investigation as his motive for attacking Brennan, the move amounts to one of the rare instances since the firing of former FBI Director James Comey where Trump has shown a willingness to move beyond threats and actually use the powers of the presidency to punish people he believes had a role in the Russian Federation probe.
