British Open: Georgia Hall claims first major victory

Phatlum is chasing a maiden major title this week

Twenty-two years later, she has her hands on one of the big five trophies in women's golf - remarkably her first LPGA title of any sort.

She was the deserved favorite and yet it all went horribly wrong at the third and fourth holes, where she hacked her way to triple bogey and bogey. Hall would be the first Englishwomen to win the Open in 14 years.

Their only challenger, in the loosest sense of the word, was Ryu, who had admitted Saturday that her playoff defeat in last month's KPMG PGA Championship had hurt and now redemption was in her sights, chasing two golfers without one official LPGA victory.

Brown had tweeted Hall on the eve of the tournament to tell her how good her putting stroke was looking. Because she had never won as a professional, Hall often joked to herself that her first victory would be a major.

Hall is the first English major victor since Karen Stupples won this event in 2004, and the fourth overall along with Laura Davies and Alison Nicholas.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's Ben Campbell holds a four shot lead after the second round of the Fiji International tournament.

When the putt dropped and Bournemouth's Georgia Hall was confirmed as the Women's British Open champion she was lifted high up into the air by father Wayne with the packed grandstands in rapture.

When Phatlum found sand off the tee on the 17th and compounded the error by three-putting for a double bogey, Hall had the luxury of a three-shot lead and could easily afford her only bogey of the day on the 18th. Hall ticked the first, Phatlum the second and the fifth, both made birdie at the fourth and sixth. She was in the final group in the Open past year, and finished in a tie for third.

Hall tied for the lead with a 10-foot birdie at the 13th hole, before she and Phatlum both birdied the par-five 15th to remain locked together.

She became the first English player of either sex to win a major at Royal Lytham since Tony Jacklin won the 1969 British Open. Thidapa Suwannapura won the Marathon Classic two weeks ago while Ariya Jutanugarn triumphed at the Ladies Scottish Open last week, having also landed the U.S. Women's Open in June.

"It is too good to be true", Hall said. And add to that number Thailand's Atthaya Thitikul, who earned the Smyth Salver award as the low amateur at the Ricoh Women's British Open. "I'm not allowed to show any emotion because if I show I'm happy that's not right", Hall senior revealed.

'I'm so pleased with the way I'm playing and I'll just get myself into my little bubble and see what happens, ' she said.

"He texted me last night and said: 'Go Georgia, hit the fairways and greens and make your fair share of putts, I'm pulling for you.' It's great to have him as a friend", Hall said.

World No. 4 So Yeon Ryu, who finished in third place at Lytham on Sunday, knows all about the value of role models after benefiting from the likes of Se Ri Pak and Jiyai Shin in her native Korea.
