Buzarnescu, Sakkari rally for spots in Silicon Valley final

Danielle Collins San Jose 2018

Mertens, bidding for her fourth title of the year, moves into a semi-final against fifth seeded Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu.

Contesting the Bay Area event for the first time in her career, Maria Sakkari continued to upset after she dismissed McHale here on Monday to snap a four-match losing streak and saw off Babos in under an hour to reach her fifth tour-level career quarter-final. Buzarnescu defeated Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic, 6-1, 7-5, before Mertens completed a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Johanna Konta.

Collins reaches her second semi-final of the year and will play the victor of the late match between Venus Williams and Maria Sakkari.

She won four straight games in the second set to put pressure on Collins, and ultimately evened the match with a forehand victor.

Day Four: Accountant Testifies How She Helped Hide Manafort’s Ukraine Income
Friday began with testimony from Ayliff, who handled Manafort's tax preparations before retiring and turning them over to Laporta. She also sent letters to banks noting that Manafort anticipated a $2.4 million payment by November 2016 for work in Ukraine.

Collins, also looking to make her first WTA final, never recovered.

In a rematch of Hobart International final in January, Buzarnescu fought back from a set down to get revenge and set up the biggest match of her career. "I really need to look at that and use it to stay strong and positive for the future". She closed out Collins by winning the final six points.

Konta broke serve in the opening game of the second set, only for Mertens to take the Briton's first two service games on her way to victory.
