Child dies after being thrown into river by mother

Florida woman arrested after allegedly throwing her 4-year-old daughter off bridge killing her

A Tampa woman accused of dropping her four-year-old daughter in a river and letting her drown made her first appearance before a judge on Friday.

Rescue divers pulled the unconcious girl from the water almost half an hour later and she was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A girl died Thursday afternoon after being thrown into the Hillsborough River, according to Tampa police.

From her third-floor condominium unit near the river, Vicki Walker took cellphone images of the curious site of a woman in the water and shared the pictures with Tampa Bay television station WFTS. Police say she had stolen a vehicle - a grey Nissan Altima - from a auto lot in St. Petersburg earlier Thursday.

Tampa police say Shakayla Denson, 26, tossed her daughter into a river. The officer caught up to Jonchuck just as he stopped at the top of the Dick Misener Bridge, pulled Pheobe out, held her close to his chest, walked over to the railing and threw her into Tampa Bay.

Higher Death Toll From Hurricane Maria Than Previously Thought
But there's no way to know for sure until more information is released by the Puerto Rican government, Santos-Lozada said. The Puerto Rican government hired George Washington University to review the number of lives lost due to the 2017 storm.

"Unfortunately at this point there are more questions than there are answers", he said. The investigation was closed Tuesday after no evidence of maltreatment, abuse or neglect was found, the agency said.

Police said a woman, believed to be the child's mother, is in custody.

Divers were called to the scene and found Je'Hyrah under the water about 75 feet off shore. ". they felt paralyzed by the whole thing". They were by themselves in the river so I don't know why I took a picture.

"The child was screaming", Dugan said. "It's the craziness of the world we live in at this time".

Though reports indicate a woman, believed to be the victim's mother, was arrested, Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said he could offer few additional details about the suspected crime.
