Chinese plane slides off Manila airport runway in heavy rain

Chinese passenger plane with 165 people skids off runway in Manila

A plane arriving from China veered off a runway at Manila's airport while landing in a downpour around midnight then became stuck in the mud with one engine and a wheel ripped off before the 165 people on board scrambled out through an emergency slide, officials said on Friday. All others aboard Xiamen Air Flight 8667 were unhurt.

The plane "misapproached" on its first attempt to land and lost contact with the control tower on the second attempt and skidded upon touchdown, said Ed Monreal, the airport's general manager.

A passenger has filmed from inside a Xiamen Airlines jet as it crashed while landing at Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the Philippines.

All the passengers and crew of Xiamen Air flight MF8667 were safe and were taken to an airport terminal, where they were given blankets and food before being taken to a hotel, Philippine officials said.

"With God's blessing all passengers and the crew were able to evacuate safely and no injuries except for about four who had some superficial scratches". After rounding over the airport for almost an hour, the plane attempted landing at 15:55 UTC, when the accident was reported.

The aircraft is still resting on its belly near the end of the airport's main runway where it came to a stop after the accident, which occurred late on Thursday evening.

The Xiamen Airlines plane was at the conclusion of a two-and-a-half-hour flight from the southern Chinese city of Xiamen when the incident reportedly took place.

The authorities lifted part of the body off the ground Friday morning to recover its cargo as well as its flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder, both vital to determining the cause of the accident.

The incident forced a partial shutdown of the Philippines' main airport Friday.

Aviation authorities have closed the airport's main runway until 4pm, forcing some airlines to cancel, delay or reroute flights.

A smaller runway for domestic flights remained open, they said.
