Hamas and Israel agree on truce to end Gaza flare-up

Palestinians gather around a building after it was bombed by an Israeli aircraft in Gaza City

And while The Washington Post's opening sentence recounts the events in reverse chronological order it does explicitly state that the Israeli strikes were in response to the Palestinian rockets: "Israel struck more than 150 targets in Gaza in response to a barrage of rockets from the Palestinian territory, its military said Thursday, in a significant escalation even as negotiations took place on a longer term cease-fire" (Emphasis added).

Shortly after, an Israeli airstrike flattened the five-story cultural centre in the Shati refugee camp, a crowded district of Gaza City.

Earlier on Thursday, a Palestinian official said armed factions in Gaza were prepared to halt their rocket attacks on southern Israel if the Israeli military stopped its air strikes.

The IDF said the strike came in response to a rocket fired at Beersheva earlier in the day and was an "indication of the IDF's intelligence and operational capabilities".

Abu Mujahed, spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committee, a smaller faction in Gaza, said on his Facebook page: "Upon Egyptian and global efforts, a ceasefire between Palestinian resistance began conditional on the commitment of the occupation".

In a tweet, the Israeli military said Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza, had "used the building for military purposes".

At least three Palestinians died in Gaza, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in a CNN report. According to the Jerusalem Post, more than 200 rockets and mortars were launched since August 8, leaving 28 Israelis injured.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened his security cabinet late into the night on Thursday.

Hamas is demanding the lifting of an Israeli-Egyptian border blockade that has devastated Gaza's economy, while Israel wants an end to rocket fire, as well as recent border protests and launches of incendiary balloons, and the return of the remains of two dead soldiers and two Israelis believed to be alive and held by Hamas.

"Among the sites targeted were a weapons manufacturing and a storage facility, a complex used for the Hamas' naval force and a military compound used for rocket launching experiments", the Israeli military said in a statement.

After a sleepless night for residents of Gaza and nearby Israeli communities on Wednesday, there was little respite on Thursday morning.

The ceasefire reports came just an hour after the security cabinet completed a four-hour meeting on Gaza, instructing the military to "continue acting forcefully" against terror groups in the Strip.

Gaza's Health Ministry identified those killed in the airstrikes from Wednesday to Thursday as Hamas fighter Ali Ghandour, 23-year-old Enas Khamash and her daughter Bayan. "The rocket hit their house and smashed it, you can see the damage", said Abdullah Khammash, 31 and a cousin of the woman and child killed.

Palestinians gather around a building after it was bombed by an Israeli aircraft, in Gaza City, Aug. 9, 2018. A vehicle parked nearby was smashed. Israel said the militants had fired on Israeli troops near the border, but Hamas said the militants were taking part in a drill.

"If the current escalation, however, is not contained immediately, the situation can rapidly deteriorate with devastating consequences for all people", he said in a statement.

The three flare-ups since July, which follow months of tensions due to protests and clashes along the Gaza border, have raised fears of a fourth war between the two sides since 2008. Some rockets landed in the communities, and many others were shot down by the Iron Dome, which is created to intercept only rockets headed towards population centers.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas called on the worldwide community to "immediately and urgently intervene". Egypt has also only sporadically opened its border with Gaza over the past decade. This comes less than 24 hours after Israeli airstrikes killed three Palestinians on Wednesday night.

The statement said the building was the headquarters for Hamas's internal security service, which served as the "operational arm" of the terror group.

At least 165 Palestinians have killed by Israeli fire since then.
