Jordan attack: Five militants in custody after raid

Salt that was blown up by the terrorists

On Saturday, security forces raided buildings west of the capital of Amman as part of the manhunt.

Three members of Jordan's security forces were killed Saturday when they stormed a hideout of suspected militants that had been rigged with explosives, the government spokeswoman said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Friday's bomb blast in Al-Fuhais, a mostly Christian town, and the identities of the suspects were not known.

King Abdullah, a Middle East ally of Western powers against Islamist militancy who has also safeguarded Jordan's peace treaty with Israel, has been among the most vocal leaders in the region in warning of threats posed by radical groups.

Security forces gather near a damaged building at the city of Salt, Jordan, August 12, 2018.

Witnesses heard several strong explosions near the site which a security source said were explosives being detonated by the police as they closed in on the militants.

The militants are believed to have been involved in a bombing in Amman, the capital, on Friday in which a police officer died.

Ghuneimat initially said one officer was killed, but later updated the death toll to three.

Turkish lira hits record low amid financial panic, rising United States tensions
The currency is down 40 percent just this year, shaking global investors' confidence in the country. Last week's freefall followed the U.S. doubling import tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminium.

Security forces had seized automatic weapons in a "continuing operation", government spokeswoman Jumana Ghunaimat told Reuters.

Twenty people were also injured, when a building collapsed during the raid, according to Al-Arabiya.

The Interior Ministry says the bomb that went off late Friday was planted in an area where a police vehicle usually stops during an ongoing music festival in the town of Fuheis.

Three members of the security forces were killed in the shootout with the gunmen who were holed up in an apartment in a four-storey residential bloc in Salt, she said in a statement.

The minister added that a special team demolished the remaining parts of the building "because it is too unsafe to be around it".

Prime Minister Omar al-Razzaz pledged that Jordan would "not be complacent in the hunt for terrorists".

Ghneimat said that the security forces raided the house in Salt after receiving a tip.

Jordan earlier this year said it had foiled an Islamic State plot that included plans for a series of attacks last November on security installations, shopping malls and moderate religious figures, state media reported.
