Chase Elliott has won the second stage of the Cup race at Watkins Glen.

Martin Truex Jr., who started fourth in the 90-lap race around the 2.45-mile natural terrain course, is chasing his third straight road course victory.

Elliott won the race's second stage and brought the sellout crowd to its feet with a pass of Busch. Pole-sitter Denny Hamlin finished 13th. Kyle Busch finished third, 20 seconds behind, followed by Daniel Suarez and Erik Jones, a triumvirate of Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas.

Truex is seeking his third consecutive victory on a road course in NASCAR's stop Sunday in the GoBowling at The Glen.

Busch took charge on the restart, pulling away to a lead of almost three seconds over Truex, with Hamlin third and Chase Elliott fourth.

Midway through the segment, the Big 3 of Busch, Truex and Kevin Harvick were running in the top 10, but Elliott dominated and beat Busch by 1.3 seconds. He lasted less than three laps on Sunday after sliding off course and then heading to the garage with a broken radiator, his day done. Busch pitted the next time around to stay on the same strategy, but Truex stayed out to win his seventh stage of the season. "I'd come with my dad and now I'm bringing my kids", said Dane Schuster, alongside his sons, Jake and Tyler.

Like Sonoma, Watkins Glen can be unpredictable.

While you're free to revel in Elliott's first win and buy as much merchandise as your heart desires it's important that you don't get carried away and think that NASCAR is somehow "saved" or that 10 years of television audience declines are suddently going to be reversed because the 22-year-old won a race on a Sunday in August. Busch will now start 36th and Menard will start last in the 37-car field after each failed inspection once. NASCAR returns to the Irish Hills of Michigan next weekend for the Consumer's Energy 400, at Michigan International Speedway.

The sophomore class at Joe Gibbs Racing is coming of age.

The news caught Cup series leader Kyle Busch by surprise after qualifying Saturday evening.

NASCAR said Elliott has passed a physical and is approved to race.

The cars of Paul Menard, who qualified 14th, and Kurt Busch, who qualified 21st, were the only ones to fail inspection. Elliott held a consistent lead, and appeared headed for victory.

Elliott hasn't competed in any of NASCAR's national series since he drove in the July Cup race at Daytona in 2012. The only Xfinity race I ever won was right here on a road course, and lo and behold, he wins his first on a road course.

The start of the 2018 race season is expecting another stellar year of tickets sales, as WGI President Michael Printup said he expects to sell-out seating for the fourth year in a row.
