Lost contact lens removed from woman's eye after 28 years

'Lost' contact lens removed from woman's eyelid after 28 years

When a United Kingdom woman went to the doctors with a swelling in her upper left eyelid, she didn't expect the cause to date back to a contact lens she thought fell out 28 years before.

According to Health.com, the contact was a rigid gas permeable (RGP) lens which the woman hadn't worn since she was a teenager.

That's when the woman's mother recalled her daughter being hit in her left eye with a shuttlecock while playing badminton 28 years ago, when she was 14 years old.

Anyone who wears contact lenses knows how tricky they are to find if you drop them. It wasn't until recently that it began to cease problems when the tissue surrounding the lens became infected and the cyst formed in her eyelid.

A 42-year-old woman visited the hospital in Dundee, Scotland, with swelling in the eye.

Fury's father restrained as Wilder crashes Pianeta weigh
Paul Gascoigne managed to land a few friendly punches on the chin of the world heavyweight boxing champion Deontay Wilder tonight. Fury's promoter and Wilder himself both confirmed that the bout had been arranged, with details expected to emerge next week.

The paper explains the woman, who is not named, suffered swelling to her eye after the incident but that inflammation was successfully treated by her GP.

"I would like to reassure patients that contact lenses are safe when used appropriately", he added.

'However, it can be inferred that the lens migrated into the eyelid and resided there.

"During surgery, an encapsulated cyst was found". When surgeons removed the lump, the cyst ruptured revealing the lens. It was later confirmed that this was an RGP lens.

Unusual as the case may appear, it is far from the only contact lens oddity in the medical annals. "The migration of a rigid gas permeable (RGP) lens into the eyelid is a rare cause of eyelid swelling". Doctors said they found four past cases of "lens migration" due to trauma, but none that laid dormant for as long as 28 years. The patient has since made a complete recovery and there has been no damage to her vision.
