Johns Hopkins Hospital ranked third for the second year in a row in U.S. News & World Report's latest rankings of American hospitals. Mercy San Juan tied with Sacramento's Mercy General Hospital for the No. 3 spot, and Sutter Roseville Medical Center came in at No. 5.

The only Florida hospital to place in the top five in one of the 16 specialty rankings nationally was Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami, which was ranked the countrys best hospital for ophthalmology. The results were announced on the U.S. News & World Report web site. But rankings have also stirred controversy among hospitals.

Measurements used to rank 514 hospitals by state and region include risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.
