Melania Trump’s parents sworn in as US citizens

Melania Trump's parents are sworn in as U.S. citizens

First lady Melania Trump's parents have become United States citizens after taking the citizenship oath during a ceremony on Thursday.

First lady Melania Trump's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, became US citizens on Thursday, taking advantage of a program that President Trump has long railed against.

Viktor was a auto dealer, and Amalija worked in a textile factory. Some workers inside didn't know what was going on.

The latter is unlikely, since applicants must prove they could do a job no other American could.

The couple's lawyer said they had "travailed a wonderful journey". The first lady herself was granted citizenship in 2006.

Mr Wildes did not explain how they got those green cards, raising the prospect they were sponsored by Melania Trump or another family member based on what Mr Trump has called "chain migration" or family-based migration.

"This golden experiment, these doors that are in America, remain hinged open to attractive people as they have today", Wildes said.

The First Lady wears an nearly "naked" dress while accompanying her husband to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. Wildes told the newspaper that the Knavs fulfilled the five-year requirement, but declined to give further comment. She said the first lady's parents "are not part of the administration and deserve privacy". Trump has advocated a "merit-based" system, but has not proposed any method of admitting immigrants to the USA to replace those categories.

The president proposed replacing most family-based immigration with a skills-based system after an attempted bombing by a Bangladeshi immigrant in NY last December.

Tuesday Trivia: wanna watch the Perseid meteor shower?
However, most like the Perseid , can only be seen under ideal conditions , which according to Blake, will take place August 10-14. If you decide to go shooting star spotting, don't forget to let your eyes adjust to the dark for about 15 to 20 minutes.

They had been living in the U.S.as permanent residents.

Experts estimate those measures would cut legal immigration into the USA almost in half.

Wildes wouldn't say how long the Knavses have lived in the US.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs had been living in the USA as permanent residents.

The Knavses' citizenship ceremony was kept hush-hush around the Jacob K Javits Federal Building. They had no comment at the time, but the building where they were spotted holds offices where federal immigration officials process applications for citizenship.

The couple met in Sevnica, Slovenia in 1966, and Melania was born in the same town.

She attended high school in the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, and changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modeling.

She settled in NY in 1996, met the future president two years later and became his third wife in 2005. They married in 2005.

President Donald Trump's in-laws are officially United States citizens, obtaining their citizenship through the sponsorship of their adult daughter, one of the very categories of family visas that the administration has sought to end.
