Sevilla Threaten Withdrawal From Spanish Cup Over Eligibility Rule

Sevilla threaten to quit Super Cup in row over Barcelona's non-EU players

The Spanish Super Cup against Sevilla is a game of particular significance for Leo Messi: if the new Barcelona captain finds himself on the winning side in Tangiers he will become the most successful player in Camp Nou history by lifting a 33 career trophy with the club.

Ernesto Valverde's men have endured a mix bag of results, having lost their two previous friendlies against AC Milan and AS Roma.

It had been thought the Spanish Super Cup was the same but Sevilla said they would object to "an improper line-up".

Sevilla FC is surprised by the RFEF's announcement 24 hours before the Super Cup.

"It has said that as many non-EU players as desired can be registered".

This is also the first year that the trophy will be decided over one game, with the Super Cup previously a two-legged affair.

'Manhattan Madam' expected to appear before Mueller grand jury
District Judge Beryl Howell of Washington, D.C., held Andrew Miller in contempt on Friday, the Washington Post reports . He also served as an adviser to Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, but left amid controversy in 2015.

Three of Barcelona's signings this summer are non-EU with Arturo Vidal (Chile), Malcom and Arthur (both Brazilian) favourites to be in the Blaugrana's matchday squad for the Supercopa and beyond.

"The Club's legal department is studying the matter and should FC Barcelona submit a team with more than three non-EU players, it would present possible ground for the filing of a complaint on account of an improper line-up". Barca have taken four non-EU players to Morocco, including defender Marlon.

Playmaker Philippe Coutinho is a non-EU star, too, however, he has reportedly acquired a passport through his wife this summer.

Despite the adjustment potentially giving his side an edge, Barca boss Valverde is also far from content.

"I think that Sevilla are professionals and we are professionals".

Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, who are from South American countries, have European Union citizenship.
