Spike in part-time jobs offsets full-time losses, bringing down unemployment rate

'Another head scratcher': Canada adds 54100 jobs in July

"While a lot of the attention is going to go to the fact that this was a very large increase in headline employment, it is not almost as strong as that number makes it seem", said Andrew Kelvin, senior rates strategist at TD Securities.

Stats Canada says the decrease in employment for Alberta is due to the lack of full-time work, however, part-time work saw an increase creating little change in the rate for July.

"Still, the labour market remains at or near full employment, and will do its part to justify a Bank of Canada rate hike in the months ahead", he added.

Windsor's unemployment rate rose by just over half a percentage point in July, according to a monthly data release by Statistics Canada.

Across the provinces, Ontario gained 60,600 jobs - all in part-time work - and the unemployment rate dropped 0.5 percentage points to 5.4 per cent for its lowest reading since July 2000.

Manchester police say 10 people hospitalized after shooting
Greater Manchester police said the injuries ranged from "minor to major" but most didn't appear to be life-threatening. Police said they hoped the less seriously injured victims would begin to leave hospital during the course of the day.

Unemployment in the region was recorded at 7 per cent in June.

The healthy rise though was driven entire by part-time employment, which jumped by 82,000 jobs, while 28,000 full-time positions were shed.

Average hourly wage growth, which is closely monitored by the Bank of Canada, continued its gradual slide last month to 3.2 percent after expanding 3.6 percent in June and 3.9 percent in May.

In an interview, Shenfeld added that "for the past year, Canadians have certainly been enjoying a very solid labour market with a low unemployment rate and that's still true in the latest data". Employment in the goods-producing sector fell by 36,500 jobs, mostly in manufacturing, while the services sector gained a net 90,500 positions, the majority in education and health care. The bulk of the job creation was in the public sector.

On a year-over-year basis, employment rose by 245,900 jobs, or 1.3 percent.
