Tiger Woods is in hunt but laments one hole that got away

McIlroy showing the anti-inflammatory patch he was wearing in Bellerive

The quiet American looked set to match the largest 54-hole lead in tournament history when he bolted five shots clear after 13 holes from a large group including Tiger Woods at Bellerive. The day was over-except no, not quite.

What might not have been widely predicted, however, was Brooks Koepka's dominance.

Sirens blared across Bellerive, putting the second round of the PGA Championship on hold and ending a day of scoring rarely seen in a major.

On Sunday, finally, they'll collide. Woods had to settle for a 66, and by the time everyone else came through the 17th hole, he slipped back to a tie for sixth, four shots out of the lead.

For any other golfer, it would have been respectable, impressive, good for an aside. Big Koepka fan? Huge Justin Thomas enthusiast?

"I thought I played really clean cards, really clean rounds", said Woods, who made eight birdies and three bogeys over the course of the two rounds.

"That self-belief has to come out and I feel like the last six to eight weeks has been a real positive for me. I've been so in the zone, you don't know where you are". Woods struggled early in his first round with a couple bogies.

"He's got a great head on his shoulders", Furyk said. Closer to the green, along the fencing that separates the course from a surrounding neighborhood, heads peeked over, grown men on tippy-toes angling for a glimpse. A little boy in a neon shirt perched on a tree branch above them. But he missed the eagle.

Parker Solar Probe launch delayed until Sunday
The goal for the Parker Solar Probe is to make 24 passes through the corona during its seven-year mission. EDT (13:03 IST) from Cape Canaveral in Florida on Saturday.

But for all the buzz Woods generated on Saturday, the reality is that capturing a 15th major from four shots back of the front-running Brooks Koepka will require something special. Instead, he may have overcorrected. "For sure, it was the craziest round I think he's ever seen. And I blew it by about four feet".

Lowry was three under par for the first ten holes of his second round when play was suspended by rain yesterday. It nearly goes without saying that until he can find some consistence with his scoring clubs - namely his wedges and his putter - he will continue to fall short in the majors. So there's no feeding putts. 'It takes a lot out of you in this heat and it's more mental than physical. "We don't have any, the greens are too slow and too soft for that".

The 25-year-old is without a win since victory in the Open at Royal Birkdale last year and 12 months on there would be no repeat at Carnoustie, where he went into the final round with a share of the lead but stumbled to a closing, birdie-free 76.

Day, the 2015 US PGA Champion, will have to complete the back nine of his second round on Saturday morning with threesomes going off two tees, before the third round starts. Because it's fun to imagine, really, this what if becoming WHAT IF becoming what will it take?

"I've worked my way into a chance to win this tournament just to throw it away on a bad decision", said Spieth. He'll have to hope for Koepka to stumble, which he doesn't often do, not once he's wrangled the leaderboard as well as he has at Bellerive. Woods had his mojo back early in the round and was sitting pretty at three-under par before the delay.

Woods and Fowler were among those just happy to get off the course.

Woods didn't discount the fact that the long day might have had an impact.

Woods is by no means the favorite.
