Ton-up Kohli piles on agony for England in third Test

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami

Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes provided stiff resistance as India endured a wicketless session against England, who reached 173 for 4 at tea on the fourth day of the third Test. Now, England still needs 498 runs to win which seems a task which is close to impossible.

Only four teams have scored more than 400 to win a test, West Indies' 418 to beat Australia in 2003 being the highest.

Pujara was 56 not out and India captain Kohli, who made 97 in the first innings, 54 not out.

It led to their eventual downfall, and they departed within five balls over the 25th and 26th overs.

England's travails were compounded by the loss of wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow with a broken finger.

An x-ray revealed he had suffered a small fracture to his left middle finger.

Whatever he says, I'm sure it's to do with getting that monkey off his back about his record in England. England take this Test match to day five now.

With India in firm control of the third Test, Kohli's knock of 103 has probably ensured that England have no chance to make a comeback into the Test.

Pujara hit 72 on day three of the third Test against England to end that run and though he was happy with the fifty he was disappointed to miss out on a hundred.

It was a welcome return to form for Pujara, who averaged just 14 while playing for Yorkshire earlier this season. "Our bowlers might argue that we've perhaps given him a few too many chances but the bloke has shown that he is high-quality". "I was confident enough that a big one was coming soon".

Roy Hodgson: it's clearly not a penalty, I don't accept that
It's a cause for frustration and anger. "It's not a penalty". Today we were not brilliant but we still won. Quality costs a specific price.

Kohli and Pujara were, understandably, in no rush to score in the morning.

He almost got out to James Anderson when his edged drive off an outswinger from the England medium-pacer, armed with the new ball, burst through Keaton Jennings's hands in the gully.

In only his second Test, Pope was off the mark first ball with an off-driven four off Ishant.

It was tempting to perceive a certain glee in the torment Kohli was exacting - all the more so when his century arrived, with a steer past gully off Chris Woakes for his 10th four from 191 balls.

On the other hand, England assistant coach Paul Farbrace rued the catches that England have dropped so far in the three Test matches.

Even after Adil Rashid bowled Rahane with a googly, he did not cut to the chase until Pandya had brought the 500 lead up with a straight six off the leg-spinner on his way to a run-a-ball 50 to add to his five-wicket haul.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli continued their stand, each making unbeaten half-centuries as the tourists progressed to 194 for two in their second innings at Trent Bridge.

Bowling: Anderson 22-7-55-1; Broad 16-3-60-0; Woakes 22-4-49-1; Stokes 20-3-68-2 (1w); Rashid 27-2-101-3; Root 3-0-9-0.

England batsman Jos Buttler said his maiden Test century was his "proudest moment in an England shirt".
