Tourists brawl over prime selfie spot at Rome’s Trevi Fountain

Two women started out a steamy fight at the famous fountain in the Italian capital

Two women ended up in a hair-pulling fight on the edges of Italy's famous Trevi Fountain after the pair wanted to take a selfie in the same spot.

As Italian newspaper La Repubblica was the first to report, the two tourists - a 19-year-old Dutch woman and a 44-year-old Italian-American - argued over the space, with their respective family members eventually getting involved. The tourists then began pushing each other before the row escalated into slaps and punches.

They had an exchange of words before a physical fight began, and their family members joined in. Eight people were reportedly involved in the fight, which required four police officers to break up. But it soon resumed, requiring the help of two more officers.

Images of the brawl were shared on social media by Rome city police, who had to intervene in the altercation. However, charges have been filed against some of the individuals for violence and threats.

The Trevi Fountain, which was designed by architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, attracts thousands of visitors each year.

To protect the city " s fountains, Rome has been imposing fines of about $274 for bad behaviour, including picnicking or camping around the fountains, bathing their feet or swimming in the fountain waters.
