Trump slams media as 'opposition party' while papers defend free press

Boston Globe Organizes Response To Trump's Attack On Media

Newsrooms across the U.S. are hitting back at President Donald Trump with a co-ordinated series of editorials condemning his attacks on "fake news" and suggesting that journalists are the enemy.

In fact, Trump has used the term "fake news" in 292 tweets since December 2016, according to the Twitter Archive. "It is very bad for our Great Country.BUT WE ARE WINNING!"

More than 300 newspapers - in major metropolitan areas and small towns and in red states and blue - wrote editorials denouncing Trump's attacking the news media as "the enemy of the people".

On Thursday, following an initiative by the Boston Globe, it is expected that some 350 editorial boards in news organisations across the United States will publish their own editorial comments on this issue.

The Globe's Opinion department, which is separate from its news operations, organized the effort.

The New York Times wrote: "If you haven't already, please subscribe to your local papers", it said.

"Insisting that truths you don't like are "fake news" is risky to the lifeblood of democracy". The paper wrote that while they agree labelling journalists as the "enemy of the people" is damaging to democracy, they were concerned about joining a "coordinated" response from the "mainstream" media because it "feeds a narrative that we're somehow aligned against this Republican president".

Trump, who has had a testy relationship with the media since declaring his candidacy, often seeks to discredit negative coverage as "fake news".

Mr Freeman wrote that the president has the right to free speech as much as his media adversaries.
