Turkey's Erdogan says to challenge 'games' on the economy

Turkish Finance Minister Berat Albayrak

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday warned against threatening his country with sanctions.

On Friday, Turkey's battered lira weakened 3 percent after a Turkish court rejected an American pastor's appeal for release, drawing a stiff rebuke from President Donald Trump, who said the United States would not take the detention "sitting down".

Erdogan told thousands of supporters in Ankara that Turkey is "threatened by the economy, sanctions, foreign currency, interest rates and inflation", The Associated Press reported. "We know your shenanigans and we will defy you".

On Aug. 10, President Donald Trump ramped up his attack on Turkey by doubling US tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel imports.

The Turkish lira has already lost about 30 percent of its value against the USA dollar since the beginning of August, when tensions between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies soared unprecedentedly over the detention of Andrew Brunson, an American Christen pastor, in Turkey over terror-related charges. The last one was in September 2015.

The lira's value dropped 38 percent against the dollar since the beginning of the year and sunk as low as 7.24 this week.

The collapse of the currency has been blamed both on the tensions with the United States and Erdogan's increasing hold on Turkey's economy and his refusal to allow the central bank to raise interest rates. At the congress, President Erdogan was re-elected as head of the party.

But Turkey accuses the YPG of being the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a rebel group blacklisted by Ankara and its Western allies.

Turkey sent troops into northern Syria two years ago to fight against the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).
