Twin Blazes Become California's Largest Wildfire In History

Facebook Jairus Ayeta 21 was confirmed as the seventh death in the deadly Carr Fire ravaging California

With the fire still burning and containment only at 30 percent, the Mendocino Complex could top the Thomas Fire that burned in Southern California late past year to become the largest in state history.

Officials say together the blazes about 100 miles (259 kilometers) north of San Francisco have charred 455 square miles (1,178 square kilometers).

More than 15 major blazes are now burning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire.

The wildfires are "extremely fast, extremely aggressive, extremely risky", said Scott McLean, a deputy chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Trump's claim "is so physically impossible, you don't even really want to respond", Lund said.

Catastrophic wildfires continue to ravage California, as one blaze almost doubled in size over the last three days, making it the largest in the state's history.

The Ranch Fire is the larger of the two fires, having consumed more than 225,000 acres so far.

Although the Mendocino Complex Fire is record-setting for California, it does seem to be following a trend of increasingly massive and unsafe fires.

"The twin wildfires, collectively known as the Mendocino Complex Fire, have together more than doubled in size in the past four days and burned through 283,800 acres of parched land-an area nearly the size of Los Angeles", reports the Washington Post.

Now, bacterial resistance to hand-rubs
During the study time period, strains of E. faecium developed an improved ability to withstand alcohol-based hand sanitizer. The isolates gathered after 2009 were on average more tolerant to the alcohol compared to bacteria taken from before 2004.

On Monday, another fast-moving fire ignited in the state - this time in Orange County, where firefighters battled the Holy Fire that expanded to more than 4,000 acres.

The fire comes as California firefighters continue to struggle to contain the deadly Carr Fire to the north of the Mendocino Fires.

It's killed seven people, including two firefighters who were helping residents evacuate from the affected area. The raging wildfire has destroyed 68 homes and forced evacuations in three Northern California counties.

'Look how big it got, just in a matter of days. Look how fast this Mendocino Complex went up in ranking. "That doesn't happen. That just doesn't happen".

"Congress and the president could help out with that by, rather than cutting fire funding, putting more money into basic" prevention efforts, he said.

'It is being diverted into the Pacific Ocean.

TRUMP: "Governor Jerry Brown must allow the Free Flow of the vast amounts of water coming from the North and foolishly being diverted into the Pacific Ocean. Must also tree clear to stop fire spreading!" - tweet Sunday that was deleted, then reposted on Monday afternoon.

"Let's be clear: It's our changing climate that is leading to more severe and destructive fires", said Cal Fire spokesman Mike Mohler.
