Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey defends failure to ban Alex Jones

Apple Facebook You Tube withdraw access to Alex Jones

Dorsey spoke out after Facebook, Apple, YouTube and Spotify all banned Jones' from their platforms for promoting hate speech and violence, making Twitter the only platform giving him unfettered access. Jack Dorsey explained on Tuesday why both remain on the platform.

Jones, who has a verified Twitter account with 855,000 followers, had not been barred for a "simple" reason, Dorsey said: "he hasn't violated our rules".

Facebook's and YouTube's enforcement action against Jones came hours after Apple removed Jones from its podcast directory on 6 August.

"If we succumb and simply react to outside pressure, rather than straightforward principles we enforce (and evolve) impartially regardless of political viewpoints, we become a service that's constructed by our personal views that can swing in any direction", Dorsey tweeted.

A number of platforms have reached a different conclusion, as the crackdown on Jones intensified this week.

Jones' YouTube channel which had 2.4 million subscribers now bears the message- "This account has been terminated for violating YouTube's Community Guidelines".

Boris Johnson told by Tory chair to apologise for burka comments
He suggested to the BBC that the reaction to the column "says a lot about internal Conservative Party politics". Mr Johnson also faced criticism from one of his former Foreign Office deputies for his "offensive" comments.

First reported by Buzzfeed News, the move comes after Spotify recently pulled a handful of Jones's podcasts from its own platform.

Twitter said it is standing by its decision not to ban accounts associated with right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, despite "outside pressure" for it to ban his content.

A set of new rules on "hateful conduct and abusive behavior", implemented by Twitter at the end of past year, added additional content, such as "hateful imagery", to the category of material banned because it constitutes "specific threats of violence or wishing for serious physical harm, death, or disease to an individual or group of people". The trillion dollar company has removed five of the six podcasts produced by InfoWars, the conspiracy theory empire that Jones founded to spread misinformation.

Jones also appealed to US President Donald Trump for help on Monday, asking him to make a bigger deal of the fact that the globalists and the Chinese were trying to steal the 2018 midterm elections.

But Dorsey put the onus on journalists to "document, validate, and refute such information directly so people can form their own opinions".

Jones has described Monday's retaliation from an array of Internet giants as a "coordinated communist-style crackdown", but it followed months of criticism demanding the social media services do more to combat disinformation and hate discourse.
