UK organ donation plan

Welcome Roy Beggs

Jackie Doyle-Price, parliamentary under-secretary of state for mental health and inequalities, said: "Organ donation saves lives".

More people in Tyne and Wear are saving lives through deceased organ donation, latest figures have revealed.

Under the new law, those who do not wish to donate their organs will still be able to opt out via the register and by using an NHS app that launches at the end of the year.

Anyone can join the NHS Organ Donor Register, age and medical conditions are not necessarily a barrier to donation.

Currently, less than half of families give consent for their loved one's organs to be donated if they are unaware of their wishes.

But Mr Beggs warned that unless it is also extended here, Northern Ireland will soon be the only part of the United Kingdom without an opt-out system.

Our health and social care correspondent Victoria Macdonald has been to the Transplant Games in Birmingham - to find out how organ donations are transforming lives.

"The decision by the UK Government to introduce an opt-out system in England is therefore very welcome and I am sure it will save hundreds of lives every year".

The goal now is to complete the certification for sending humans to space in 2019. "We're not going to let you down". Victor Glover , 42, and Michael Hopkins , 49, will fly on the first operational mission of SpaceX's crewed Dragon .

A courageous caller who lost her husband to liver failure perfectly explains why a new opt-out system for organ donations is so important.

From this December, the register will allow them to state that their family or faith leaders should be involved in discussions to ensure that religious traditions are respected.

The legislation, which was introduced in parliament in July 2017, will return to the House of Commons in the autumn.

"We want to continue to see ongoing engagement with the wider BAME and faith communities to ensure that the new system is fully understood and everyone can make an informed decision".

Three people still die each day in need of an organ transplant - and now there are 5,100 people in England on the waiting list.

She added the new system would involve a "soft opt-out", where families could override the presumption in favour of donation if they strongly believed their dead relative would not have wanted it.

"But the issue really is how do we weigh up the number of lives saved with the need to respect fully the consent of the person who has just died to what happens to their organs".
