Unveiling of provincial buck a beer scheme expected today

Beer products are on display at a Toronto beer store on Thursday

The Progressive Conservative plan will lower the minimum price of a bottle or can of beer with an alcohol volume below 5.6 per cent to $1 from $1.25 starting August 27 - a few days before the Labour Day weekend.

Speaking at a brewery in Picton, Ont., on Tuesday, the premier said the program, which was one of his promises during the spring election campaign, will not cost taxpayers anything.

Brewers are not required to charge the lower rate and few in the province sell at the current minimum.

In 2008 the previous government made a decision to ban Buck-a-Beer by setting a higher minimum price and today the retail price floor sits at $1.25.

Breweries that offer buck-a-beer this summer could get lucrative incentives including prime shelf space and free advertising with the LCBO, CTV News Toronto has learned. Once upon a time you could buy a beer for $1 a bottle.

It is unknown if any additional Ontario craft breweries will participate.

The Premier criticized the former Liberal government for increasing the price a decade ago by 25 cents.

The Medical Examiner issued a statement: "we're investigating what we believe to be a human fetus found deceased on an airplane". The flight, AA-1942, left the Queen City just before 9 p.m. and arrived at LaGuardia's Terminal B at 10:44 p.m.

Ford says the buck a beer will allow for more competition in the market.

Ontario previously had buck-a-bottle beer but the Liberal government quietly hiked the minimum price in 2008, citing its "social responsibility" mandate. However, Mr. Ford said he didn't think the lower prices would lead to more drinking and driving.

The Ford government also has plans to allow the sale of beer and wine in corner stores.

That will be in place by the Labour Day weekend, said a source. The new price will not be indexed to inflation.

In hopes of getting brewers on board with cheaper beer, Ford announced he is offering incentives to brewing companies.

"Essentially, if anyone does it, I predict that dollar beer is going to taste like it's worth about a dollar", Johnson said.
