Winnie the Pooh Banned in China. Uncanny Affinity With President Xi?

China Won't Release Disney's 'Christopher Robin' Movie

Chinese censors first whacked the lovable portly animated bear off its social media networks in 2013 when a meme circulated mocking Xi in a photo with President Barack Obama, comparing them to a cartoon image of Pooh and Tigger.

Cathleen Taff, head of distribution for Disney, has confirmed with Sky News that the film had been denied a China release.

One film fan tweeted: "It obviously means that the Chinese government admits the resemblance between President Xi and Winnie-the-Pooh".

The government in Beijing has censored online images of Winnie the Pooh after some opponents likened the bear's appearance to President Xi Jinping and have used Pooh as a symbol of resistance.

The comparison once again made rounds in 2014, when an image of Jinping shaking hands with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was posted on Twitter juxtapositioned to a picture of Pooh and Eeyore.

Highest new entry of the week is Disneys Christopher Robin which makes its chart debut at 2, the Ewan McGregor movie opens with $25 million.

The live-action film, which premieres in India on August 10 released worldwide this Friday except in China. In 2015, the Financial Times reported, a photo of Xi waving at supporters from a parade auto next to an image of Pooh in a toy vehicle was named the most censored image of the year by Global Risk Insights.

Winnie the Pooh, the character created by British author A A Milne as a companion for an eight-year-old Christopher Robin, comes to life in the film to help his now-adult friend regain his imagination.

In June, Chinese authorities blocked American TV provider HBO after Last Week Tonight host John Oliver ridiculed Xi's sensitivity over being compared to Winnie-the-Pooh.
