Woakes and Bairstow grind India into the Lord's dirt as England dominate

James Anderson now has 350 Test wickets at home- joint-second tally with Anil Kumble

Allrounder Chris Woakes displayed his batting ability with a first test century as he guided England to a commanding lead over India on Day 3 of the second test at Lord's. Seeing hope in the first session with four wickets and adding another lunch, India hoped for a smaller deficit to chase.

When bad light forced an early close on the third day, England were 357 for six in reply to India´s meagre first-innings 107 - a commanding lead of 250 runs. Challenge for the Indian side will be to bowl England out and weather the England seam attack. But once under way again in early afternoon, there was no stopping Broad - who took over from Anderson at the Pavilion end, with India on 30 for two.

He completed his maiden Test century on Saturday, when he shared an England record sixth-wicket stand against India of 189 with Bairstow (93).

Bairstow was 62 not out and recalled all-rounder Woakes 55 not out.

First, though, it was Jos Buttler who decided offence was his best option, hitting four boundaries as England surpassed India's first-innings total and took the lead.

"In T20Is and ODIs, the bowlers get tested all the time". "I went from 60 to 80 pretty quickly and all of a sudden you start thinking of three figures and you start wafting at things outside off-stump, which I hadn't been doing".

"I was probably getting a little bit nervous", Woakes said.

Anderson finished with five for 20, but he hailed the contribution of Chris Woakes, who took two wickets including the key...

Sam Curran struck 22 not out from 24 balls as England chose to continue batting despite Sunday's forecast predicting rain.

Earlier, India chose to play with two spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav, whereas Cheteshwar Pujara had a horrific return to Test cricket.

A quick word from Bairstow helped Woakes to compose himself and a pull shot over mid-wicket for three took him to the landmark off just 129 balls.

Anderson pitches the first delivery down leg and Ashwin tickles it to fine leg for a FOUR.
