Amazon considering opening up to 3,000 cashierless stores by 2021- Bbg

Amazon may open 3,000 cashierless stores by 2021 - as survey reveals it's now third in online ads

In order for Amazon to get to 3,000 stores by the beginning of 2021, it would have to open approximately 107 stores a month.

Amazon Go is going national.

An Amazon spokesperson said "we don't comment on rumors or speculation", in response to GeekWire's inquiry. The cashierless shops allow customers to load up on snacks and walk out without the hassle of standing in line as the store sends a bill later. While Seattle and Chicago are already living the dream, Amazon is now considering a plan to open upwards of 3,000 cashierless stores over the course of the next few years, according to AdAge.

Amazon has become the world's largest online retailer by offering a vast selection and quick, convenient delivery. Walmart Inc. declined as much as 0.6 per cent, reversing an earlier gain, while Target Corp. dropped about 1.5 per cent and Kroger Co. slid as much as 3.1 per cent.

Those companies had already been on notice for more than a year after Amazon bought its way into brick-and-mortar groceries with the $13.5 billion acquisition of more than 470 Whole Foods Market stores. Amazon also operates or plans to open 18 bookstores, as well as a range of smaller pop-up stores in malls and Kohl's locations.

Amazon, like many secretive technology companies, rarely telegraphs its growth plans. However, with less staff and strictly dedicated to foodstuffs, which have a higher profitability than other retail goods, Amazon hopes to recoup the investment faster than your bog-standard food store.

S. Africa issues cholera alert following outbreak in neighboring Zimbabwe
Government officials have been accused of misusing public money, including allegedly purchasing new vehicles for cabinet members. Ten years ago, an outbreak of the infection killed more than 4,000 people and at least 100,000 were sick.

When The Wall Street Journal reported a year ago that Amazon envisioned opening 2,000 brick-and-mortar grocery stores of different formats, the company took the rare step of refuting the report, instead of issuing its usual one-line statement declining to comment on reports of unannounced plans. After opening its first location in 2016, Amazon is now up to 16 locations.

The first AmazonGo store in downtown Seattle-which opened to the public back in January-reportedly cost over $1 million in hardware alone, says an unnamed source speaking with Bloomberg.

Amazon is considering a massive expansion of its Amazon Go retail store initiative, according to a new Bloomberg report. Once inside, cameras and sensors track what they pick up from the shelves and what they put back.

Amazon's ramp up could accelerate quickly.

Adding 3,000 convenience stores would make AmazonGo among the biggest chains in U.S. The internet giant is considering plans to have about 10 locations open by the end of this year, about 50 locations in major metro areas in 2019, and then as many as 3,000 by 2021, said the people, who requested anonymity discussing internal plans.
