Warnings Intensify as FEMA Says Florence

Washington Post: "Category 4 Hurricane Florence drawing closer to Carolinas and threatens "catastrophic" flooding" - "Expanding in size, violent Hurricane Florence is continuing on a beeline toward the East Coast as an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 hurricane".

Hurricane Florence is expected to come ashore as a major hurricane on Friday.

A tropical disturbance with a 60 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression is moving toward the South Texas coast and will make landfall by the end of the week, according to the National Weather Service. In contrast to the hurricane center's official track, a highly regarded European model had the storm turning southward off the North Carolina coast and coming ashore near the Georgia-South Carolina line.

The trend is "exceptionally bad news", said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy, since it "smears a landfall out over hundreds of miles of coastline, most notably the storm surge".

"These are folks who made a decision to stay and ride out the storm for whatever reason, despite having a mandatory evacuation", she said.

All eyes are on Hurricane Florence as it barrels towards the Carolinas.

In Jacksonville, next to Camp Lejeune, firefighters and police fought wind and rain as they went door-to-door to pull people out of the Triangle Motor Inn after the cinderblock structure began to crumble and the roof started to collapse.

The storm surge, or wind-driven seawater, poses a huge danger, FEMA Administrator Brock Long warned on ABC's "Good Morning America".

The path of Hurricane Florence could affect the homes of more than 5 million people, and more than 1 million of them have been ordered to evacuate.

Farther up the coast, in New Bern, about 150 people waited to be rescued from flooding on the Neuse River, WXII-TV reported.

Putin. "We have seen signs of (meddling) not just Russian Federation , but from China. from Iran and even North Korea", he said. The U.S. attorney general and the Department of Homeland Security will then have 45 days to review those findings.

"We can not stress the importance to our citizens that are in evacuations to heed the local and state warnings", said Jeffrey Byard, FEMA's associate administrator for response and recovery.

The worst of the storm's fury had yet to reach coastal SC, where emergency managers said it was not too late for people to get out. "Please heed the warnings", Mr Brock said: "Your time is running out".

Prisoners were affected, too.

Florence is the most risky of three tropical systems in the Atlantic.

Swell from Florence continues to impact much the East Coast today. Rescue swimmers and other ground crew members will head straight to Raleigh, North Carolina, Macy said. Another 400 people were in shelters in Virginia, where forecasts were less dire.

Frustrated after evacuating his beach home for a storm that was later downgraded, retired nurse Frederick Fisher grumbled in the lobby of a Wilmington hotel several miles inland.

Kevin Miller, a 50-year-old electrician, said he planned to ride out the storm at his home near Charleston.

Workers prepare a house with storm shutters ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Florence in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, U.S. September 12, 2018.

Weather Underground meteorology director Jeff Masters said Florence eventually could strike as a Category 1 with winds less than 100mph, but that is still enough to cause at least $1 billion in damage.
