BMW shows off self-driving motorcycle

BMW RGS Autonomous

When one thinks of autonomous driving, one typically thinks about cars. Nearly never does one think about an autonomous motorcycle. The bike is capable of reading its track ahead of it and can steer its way around as well. The bike is called ConnectedRide, and researchers are using the testbed to develop tech that could help riders of the future operate their bikes more smoothly and help riders avoid obstacles and prevent riders from drifting out of their lanes. Shown at BMW's Motorrad Tech Day in Miramas, the BMW - that's now an R1200GS - can start, accelerate, corner and stop independently.

Last year BMW revealed to the world the R1200RS ConnectedRide prototype; with a host of technologies including Vehicle to Vehicle Communication and a Differential Global Navigation Satellite System, it aimed to make riding a motorcycle safer, more connected and less unsafe.

Carolinas brace for the worst as monstrous Hurricane Florence nears
The storm was about 880 miles east of the Lesser Antilles - a region still recovering from last year's powerful Hurricane Maria. Maximum sustained winds were clocked at 140 miles per hour (220 kph) as it moved west-northwest at 13 miles per hour (20 kph).

However, BMW Motorrad says it has no plans for completely eliminating the rider or developing an independent motorcycle. So this tech would give bikes the ability to help the driver avoid unsafe situations in the same way autonomous safety systems in cars do. Thus, we could see active safety features begin trickling into motorcycles, much like how they've become prevalent in mass-market cars. So the bike could be summoned to your front door or even the front door of your office or place of work. So you could pull up to your place of work, get off the bike and tell it to go find a spot, just like many auto concepts of today.

The autonomous technology allows the motorcycle to take off from a dead stop, negotiate turns and curves, and then stop again all without any human assistance.
