Bobi Wine reaches home to huge celebration

Pop star-turned-opposition lawmaker Bobi Wine whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu waves to supporters accompanied by his wife Barbara Itungo Kyagulanyi at his home in Kampala Uganda Thursday Sept. 20 2018. Wine vowed Thursday to continue his fight

Ugandan security deployed on the streets of the capital and controlled roads leading to the worldwide airport on Thursday ahead of the return MP Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as singer Bobi Wine.

As soon as he landed, security forces promptly chauffeured him away.

The Daily Monitor newspaper reported that police arrested him on the tarmac after he disembarked.

"After landing at Entebbe, security surrounded him and took him away".

Kyagulanyi's case sparked protests in Uganda's capital Kampala and drew worldwide condemnation from the government's major backers including the European Union and the U.S. The Pentagon has donated equipment and weapons to the unit of the Ugandan military accused by Kyagulanyi of torturing him.

Police have blocked journalists and supporters from entering the home of the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament, an increasingly vocal critic of President Museveni's government.

But a police official said he was being escorted to his home and was not under arrest.

His message - that young Ugandans need a dynamic new head of state to tackle the myriad problems they face - has electrified citizens who say they are fed up with corruption, unemployment, and state repression of dissent.

The singer, who won a national assembly seat previous year, faces treason charges over his alleged role in an incident last month in which the president's convoy was pelted with stones.

The lawmaker, who has pleaded not guilty to treason charges, said he was beaten with an iron bar in detention in northern Uganda. The government denies that he was mistreated.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Ugandan Police Force stated that Kyagulanyi would be escorted by security personnel from Entebbe International Airport to his home, and warned against "unlawful rallies, processions and assemblies".

Bobi Wine who has been in America for close to three weeks seeking specialized treatment following his alleged torture, is expected to touch the ground at Entebbe International Airport at 12:45pm. The legal basis for the escort was unclear, and Kyagulanyi wrote on his Twitter feed before flying home that he should be able to travel freely in his country.

Journalists were barred from accessing the airport and about have a dozen were taken in for questioning, although police Spokesman Emilian Kayima said they were all freed.

A military helicopter has been deployed to patrol Entebbe and its outskirts.
