Don't Be Fooled by Hurricane Florence Being 'Downgraded.' It's Still Very Dangerous

Florence path

As of 8 a.m., the hurricane is predicted to make landfall along the coast of the Carolinas tomorrow (Sept. 14), according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Hurricane Center. "Especially for people that we've already told to evacuate".

As of Thursday morning, forecast models showed the storm bringing more rain than originally thought - officials now predict 35 inches of rain will fall in a two-day period as Florence, now a Category 2 storm with 115 miles per hour sustained winds, will stall over Wilmington after making landfall early Friday morning.

North Carolina corrections officials said more than 3,000 people were relocated from adult prisons and juvenile centers in the path of Florence, and more than 300 county prisoners were transferred to state facilities.

Florence's winds weakened as it drew closer to land, dropping from a peak of 225 kph earlier in the week, and the hurricane was downgraded from a terrifying category four to a two.

"This storm will bring destruction", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said.

A few of the high-resolution images show the towering walls of the eye of the storm where things are ever so much calmer than they are near the wall of the eye.

Hurricane Florence is a real, ongoing threat.

Overcrowded animal shelters in some North Carolina districts were facing a more grim prospect: euthanizing animals that can't be shipped to safety. An additional 400 people were in shelters in Virginia, where forecasts were less dire.

Air Force General Terrence J O'Shaughnessy, head of US Command, said search and rescue is a top priority but that the magnitude of the storm may exceed the ability of rescuers. Storm surge is why many of you have been placed under evacuation and we are asking citizens to please heed a warning.

Thousands more have been ordered to prepare to deploy if needed.

He said the magnitude of the storm may exceed the ability of the state-activated National Guard troops.

Mr Cooper's office said the current emergency declaration was helping state officials prepare for the storm.

"He is the only caregiver to me and my son", Browning said.

With the brunt of the storm yet to come, a gauge on the Neuse River in New Bern, a city near the coast, was already recording 10 feet (3 meters) of inundation, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Officials said people refusing to evacuate could end up alone, drenched and in the dark, as rescue crews won't go out to help in winds above 50 miles per hour.

Wilmington resident Julie Terrell said she was concerned after walking to breakfast past a row of shops fortified with boards, sandbags and hurricane shutters.

"I built this house myself, so I'm not anxious at all, I know it's solid", he said. "Because it's Mother Nature". Forecasters are predicting as much as 40in of rain in some localized areas. That is enough water to fill the Empire State Building almost 40,000 times.

The southern portion of the Virginia coast is under a tropical storm warning - from north of Duck, North Carolina, to Cape Charles Light, Virginia, and the Chesapeake Bay south of New Point Comfort.

She said a hurricane has a way of bringing everyone to the same level.

"If you find yourself here [in rising floodwaters], you need to get out", she said.

"Whether you have a house or not, when the storm comes it will bring everyone together".
