Eight Killed as Florence Dumps 'Epic' Rain on Carolinas

Hurricane Florence made landfall in North Carolina on Friday Sept. 14

After blowing ashore as a hurricane with winds of 90 miles per hour (145 kph), Florence virtually parked itself much of the weekend atop the Carolinas as it pulled warm water from the ocean and hurled it onshore.

Some towns have received more than two feet of rain from Florence, and forecasters warned that drenching rains totalling up to three-and-a-half feet of water could trigger epic flooding well inland through early next week.

Authorities in the U.S. state of North Carolina have warned residents that flooding could get worse.

"Were expecting additional rainfall across southeastern central into southern North Carolina and across Northern parts of SC where additional rainfall amounts that could exceed 10 inches".

"Our hearts go out to the families of those who died in this storm", Cooper said in a statement.

Water from the Neuse river floods the houses during the pass of Hurricane Florence the town of New Bern, North Carolina, on September 14, 2018. Dozens more were rescued from a collapsed motel.

"Residents should not let their guard down", North Carolina Emergency Management tweeted.

A spokesperson for the ABC affiliate said roads around the building were flooding.

If Florence doesn't wipe out oceanfront homes on stilts along the Carolinas coast, rising sea levels will. Florence lashed low-lying barrier islands that experience some of the fastest rates of sea level rise observed anywhere in the world, almost an inch (2.5 centimeters) a year.

Mother Lesha Murphy-Johnson and her baby, Zac, were killed after being trapped inside their home in Wilmington when a tree fell onto the roof at around 9.30am on Friday.

In Lenoir County a 78-year-old man was electrocuted while trying to connect extension cords and another man died after being blown away by high winds while checking on his dogs.

Water levels along the North and SC coasts are gradually receding as of Saturday night, the National Hurricane Center said.

Properties within one mile of the river were hastily evacuated on Saturday.

Florence peaked at a terrifying Category 4 with top winds of 140 mph over warm ocean water before making landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15am at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington and not far from the SC line. It came ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline.

Tottenham 1, Liverpool 2: Reds stay perfect
The second came in the 54th when Mane was able to glide past Trippier. "The Tottenham manager knows that as well", he said. The Dutchman flapped at the corner that led to Liverpool's opener.

The storm was expected to move across parts of southeastern North Carolina and eastern SC on Friday and Saturday (September 15), then head north over the western Carolinas and central Appalachian Mountains early next week, the NHC said. That, and the storm's vast circumference of hundreds of miles, means Wilmington will be inundated with rain, the advisory said.

There is really nowhere for the water to go.

Power outages affecting more than 900,000 in Carolinas.

Meanwhile, in SC, at least one gator seemed to be cool with the outer bands of wind and rain that whipped the Myrtle Beach area.

A North Carolina city says about 70 people have been rescued from a hotel whose structural integrity is being threatened by Hurricane Florence.

Two fins were spotted in the high water in Wilmington.

Tropical Storm Florence dumped "epic" amounts of rain on North and SC as it trudged inland on Saturday, knocking out power and causing at least eight deaths as flood waters that have devastated many communities kept rising.

It's moving very slowly, at about 2mph (3.2km/h).

Then it will swing to the northeast in the middle of next week on a path to the Atlantic Ocean near Nova Scotia, where it will be an extra-tropical low with gale-force winds. That's enough to fill the Chesapeake Bay or cover the entire state of Texas with almost 4 inches (10 centimetres) of water, he calculated.

And there could be 10 inches (25 cm) in south-western Virginia.

Warning of the storm's continued threat to life, Governor Roy Cooper said: "More people now face imminent threat than when the storm was offshore".

The Governor urged residents and travellers to avoid driving throughout the state because most roads are still at risk of major flooding as rain continues to hammer down.

"It's the worst feeling in the world to hear people yelling for help, and you can't do anything", she said. "It's making it hard for us to move valuable resources to areas in need". Eventually, a volunteer rescue team from IN arrived with a boat and rescued them. Eudy and his family stayed home in New Bern in part to protect their house.
