Thousands of the creatures, known as Tetragnathaspiders, spun the web near a lagoon in Aitoliko to facilitate mating in what experts call a "seasonal phenomenon", according to the BBC.
Maria Chatzaki, professor of molecular biology and genetics at Democritus University of Thrace, told Newsit Greece's high temperatures are creating the ideal climate for reproduction. They are not a threat because they are not poisonous and are, in fact, helpful for local communities because they eat mosquitos.
According to British newspaper The Guardian, Prof Chatzaki said: "The spiders are taking advantage of these conditions, and are having a kind of a party. They mate, they reproduce and provide a whole new generation".
1 year after Hurricane Maria: Vigil held to honor lives lost
Antonio Torres, one of the organizers of the vigil, said fewer people would've died if the USA government had a better response. Officials said the priority is to help people still living under tarps, as well as those in low- and middle-income housing.
Greek biologist Fotis Pergantis said the spiders are trying to catch gnats.
Residents have also reported an increase in mosquito population this time of the year, which might have contributed to the activities of the spiders.
She noted that the phenomena had been seen before in the region in 2003, and that the spiders would soon die off, and the web would degrade naturally, leaving the vegetation undamaged.
"It's the simple prey-predator phenomenon".
"There are huge numbers of male and female spiders mating [underneath the webs]", Chatzaki said.
