FDA: Certain flea and tick medication may cause neurological problems

Clarksville Now

Whether it's the best food, toys, or medication, they are our number one priority. Yes, the U.S Food and Drug Administration has stated that treatments in the isoxazoline class, meant to ward off flea and tick infestations, are now under watch.

That being said, some serious neurological reactions have been reported, including seizures in animals which have no history of such symptoms. The products may be safe for most animals but it has been shown that they cause aggressive side-effects like ataxia, seizures and muscle tremors in select cases.

The culprits are treatments in the isoxazoline class, which includes well-known brands such as Bravecto, Nexgard and Simperica.

The FDA stated they are working with manufacturers who make isoxazoline class products to include new labels on their packages, warning pet owners of the adverse effects.

Wilmington: Food, water handouts set in isolated city
North Carolina's governor is pleading with thousands of Hurricane Florence evacuees to be patient and not return home just yet. More than a dozen rivers across North Carolina were at major flood stage on Monday or threatening to rise to critical levels.

Although FDA scientists carefully evaluate an animal drug prior to approval, there is the potential for new information to emerge after marketing, when the product is used in a much larger population. These products are approved for the treatment and prevention of flea infestations, and the treatment and control of tick infestations. Fleas and ticks carry a range of diseases, including Lyme disease and plague, which can affect not only the animals but their owners.

If your dog or cat experiences any health problems while using an isoxazoline treatment, talk to your veterinarian. These drugs are not being recalled or banned, but the FDA has felt the need to alert pet owners to the possibility that the drugs can be potentially troublesome for some pets.

The FDA also encourages pet owners to report any issues with the drug's manufacturer or submit a report directly to the FDA.
